Students become lifelong learners across a variety of subjects, focusing on biblical and theological studies and learning to view and interact with the world through the lens of God’s word.
All Traditional Program students pursue the Highlands College Associate of Arts in Ministry Leadership.
Highlands College leads students through a challenging, two-year curriculum that combines foundational knowledge, biblical studies, and ministry practices. In our classes, students become adaptable thinkers and skilled ministry practitioners ‚Äì grounded in God’s Word and ready to reach a complex and changing world. Upon graduation, students will earn an Associate of Arts in Ministry Leadership from Highlands College.
Active Learning Experience
All Highlands College classes are taught in-person in an innovative model of classroom instruction that focuses on dynamic student engagement and practical application. The Active Learning approach utilizes peer discussion, group projects, and student presentations, guided by our qualified faculty, to create a deeper learning experience that extends far beyond the classroom. Our classes are healed in Learning Studios designed around this model – seating students in groups and putting the latest classroom technology at their fingertips.
Bachelor’s Completion Option
After receiving institutional accreditation, anticipated as early as Spring of 2023, our Strategic Plan prioritizes immediately pursuing approval to offer a bachelor’s degree. As we diligently work towards that near future, Highlands College students have the opportunity to pursue a four-year degree through a unique partnership with Southeastern University (SEU). After graduating from Highlands College, our articulation agreement with SEU allows accepted students the opportunity to transfer credit from their Highlands College degree into an online program to earn a Bachelor of Science in Christian Ministries.
Students entering Highlands College with approved transfer credit may apply with SEU to be simultaneously enrolled in the SEU Bachelor of Science in Christian Ministries program.
Highlands College Associate of Arts in Ministry Leadership Courses
To earn an Associate of Arts in Ministry Leadership, students complete 64 hours of courses taught by qualified faculty.
This course will provide new students with an orientation to the college experience and environment. Students will build both the confidence and skills necessary to navigate college life successfully. The engaging content and focus on applying course concepts to real-world situations will equip new college students to engage in their courses, with their professors, and with fellow students.
An introduction to reading and writing with an emphasis placed on critical thinking skills and the Christian’s responsibility to use language logically, effectively, and ethically through the theories of writing and rhetorical models. Students will have extensive writing practice and instruction and will gain the ability to communicate clearly and efficiently using a variety of written and spoken methods.
This course will strengthen research skills and the synthesizing of information from many types of scholarly resources. New writing concepts will be introduced using different rhetorical strategies. These skills will allow the student to write and speak professionally and with authority in ministry.
A study in both theory and practice in the principles of effective speech development and presentation. Students will understand and apply healthy and effective communication principles and practices to speaking before audiences, in small groups, and in conversations with others.
An introduction to basic concepts of problem solving and critical thinking including logic, numbers and numerical reasoning, ratios and proportions, percentages, and basic budgeting.
An overview of Christianity from the Apostolic Age to the present. Special attention will be given to the early church period, the Protestant Reformation, the development of denominations, American Christianity, and World Christianity.
This course will reveal the impact that societies and groups have on individuals, as well as the role that individuals have in influencing groups and societies. Sociological theories and concepts are explored with an emphasis on culture, socialization, social institutions, social processes, and change through a Christian worldview. Practical application of sociological theories will be explored within ministry contexts.
This course is a detailed study of the doctrine of Scripture. Topics include revelation, Jesus Christ, divine-human authorship, inspiration, inerrancy, canonicity, interpretation, and authority. Special attention is given to the sufficiency, clarity, authority, and necessity of the Bible. Students will discover and articulate the message, meaning, and authority of Scripture.
An examination of the redemptive story of the Bible from Genesis to Malachi, emphasizing how that story shapes the Christian’s worldview and informs life decisions. Students will study the Old Testament as the story of God; His calling of people into a relationship with Him, as well as with each other into a community.

An introduction to the authority of Scripture, understanding the formation and transmission of the Bible, and reliable methods for integrating its truth. Students will gain the tools necessary for studying, interpreting, and communicating the truth of the Bible.
An examination of the biblical and theological foundations for completing the mission of God. This course will provide students with a better understanding of God’s mission (missio Dei) and the vital role the local church is called to play in advancing the kingdom of God. Biblical, historical, and cultural perspectives will be explored.
An introduction to key theological themes, contextualizing them within the Bible, and contributions from major theologians. Students will gain an understanding of the following doctrines: God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Faith, Creation, Salvation, Atonement, and Heaven. Students will learn key terms, relevant biblical passages, and contributions from Church History.
A practical examination of what it means to hold a Christian worldview and the biblical basis for the Christian worldview, including a discussion of other worldviews encountered in American culture and society, and the importance of Christian worldview to effective gospel ministry.
