The best is yet to come. If you are around the church world for more than five minutes, you hear it, you say it, you believe it. Of course eternity with God will be that “best to come.” All creation leans with eager expectation alongside those who follow Jesus, aching for our new Heaven new Earth. And yet, our present realities exist. There is salvation to witness; there is life yet to be inhaled in the lungs of the lifeless. So herein lies the conundrum: how do I make this year a great year, my best year yet even, knowing that regardless, the best is still to come?
Let’s look at scripture…
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19
I can’t help but think that as Christians we often overcomplicate things. We like the goosebumps, the hype, and the conference world. Often we hold too tightly to all elements of the church, but allow the holy text that directs it all to be the most distant piece. Matthew 28:19 is deemed by man as the Great Commission, the ultimate charge. It is weighty, it is scandalous, it is the plan the cross set into motion. What would your year look like if you didn’t focus on the latest sermon quote or the latest celebrity Christian, but instead invited in the dynamic wonder of the call straight from the mouth of the Messiah? What if we shifted our vision to a holy focus in this way, and what if we did it every single day?
Go therefore and make disciples-INVEST
• Identify your sphere of influence and invest into the lives it holds. Always point your people to their next step in following Jesus. Let people be the priority, every single day.
Baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Spirit-DECLARE
• Live a life of public declaration. Celebrate dead to alive, mourning to dancing, sorrow to joy, ashes to beauty every single day, so that the triune God may invade all your spaces, speech, and to-do lists, pointing others to salvation through a life lived worthy of your calling. Live out the life water baptism suggests is alive in you.
Teaching them all that I have commanded you-TEACH
• Be a better teacher. Know the scripture. We live in a generation with heads full of leadership one-liners, but only a handful of scripture. Read your Bible every single day. It can’t come alive if you don’t know what it says.
And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age-SOW
• Never stop sowing seeds this side of eternity. Jesus invites you to partner with Him in Kingdom work today, this hour, right this very minute. Sow, sow, sow, every single day. Let your “well done good and faithful servant” be one spoken because you chose to live so radically that it you to rely on the “always with you” promise of Jesus.
May 2017 be a great year, every single day. The best is yet to come.
